White Caps at Sprint #2 Shadow Cliffs

June 14, 2010

Lordy lordy…white caps on the lake at 7:30am in the morning! We knew this was going to be a difficult day. But we were wrong and surprised at the same time. Maybe it was a touch of something else too. While we veterans, coaches and parents, worried about the conditions on the water, our keiki were undaunted. They took to the water and lined up like Hawaiian waterman they have been trained to be. Watching from the starting line at the officials tent, it was feelings of pride and anxiety as many of us hoped for the best, and best they did. Many crews made it across the finish line against headwind gusts clocked 20+ knots. Though there were some huli the morning the races went surprisingly well. No doubt to the experience of our membership and NCOCA Officials and coaches.

Biggest kudos for the day goes to Ke Kai U’hane and their 12 & Under crew who were actually all 5 year olds. With Uncle Les at the helm and Uncle Ron as back up these keiki braved the winds and crossed the finish line unscathed. It was a great experience for our keiki. Winds actually returned to normal by noon just in time for the open and master crews to race…heheheh.

Congrats to Ho’okahi Pu’uwai for both hosting and taking 1st place overall honors for AA Division. It looks like a battle is brewing over the NCOCA Goliaths with Season totals starting to balance between Lokahi and Ho’okahi Pu’uwai by only 2 points. Congrats to San Francisco Outrigger again for another 1st place overall for the day and A Division…their second since the start of the season. The regattas from here on out will be great to watch. Next stop Sprint #3 at Quarry Lakes, Fremont.
