4-man Fun at Sprint #4 Quarry Lakes

July 11, 2010

The 4-man canoe racing returns to the NCOCA, albeit briefly. It was fun to see this race return as it was a favorite back in the day. Many clubs lined up at the starting line after the official races were concluded with eager 4-man crews. Kamali'i and others were anxious to race and signed up for the event in mass throughout the day. Many thanks to all the clubs and crews that participated and hope you enjoyed the fun event. The 4-man format was possible thanks to Hui Wa'a for incorporating the fun format, and hosting the regatta. Many were dancing to the cool tunes provided by Helen Workman over the PA system, and many enjoyed getting instructions from Master of Ceremonies Randy Nichols.

Thanks must also go to coaches and club leaders for managing your crews on land and water, and getting them to the starting line. The official racing ended at 2:25pm and gave all of those in attendance an opportunity to wind down early and get home at a respectable time. Do I see a trend? Or is it crews are paddling a lot faster? Last regatta concluded at approximately 2:44pm.

On the water, there were many surprises as the usual winners were challenged for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place honors. Coaches are doing well to train and prepare their crews. The one week layoff between races is also helping to properly train and rest crews for greater performances. Some races of note were the Coed Junior (19 & Under) Coed. Kamali'i continues to win this event for a 2nd straight time and appears to be getting stronger. In the Girls 16 & Under Ho'okahi Pu'uwai and Kilohana keep trading 1st place with Ho'okahi Pu'uwai girls coming out on top this time around. This will be a battle down to the Championship Regatta. In the 1000 meter Girls 19 & Under Kamali'i has dominated the last 2 sprints, while the Boys from Lokahi dominated the last 2 sprints.

Moving to the Open division, my favorite, the 2000 meter 7 turn event, Hui Wa'a got the double whammy with their Women and Men crews taking 1st place shaving 20 and 40 seconds, respectively, off the last regatta times. Not to mention earning 14 points for their effort. In the Open 500 Kamali'i Women again take 1st while the Men from Monterey Bay Outrigger take 1st.

Its been awhile since we last saw Hui Wa'a take large club (AA) honors in a regatta, and congrats to them for their strong 1st place effort. And congrats again to San Francisco Outrigger for taking 1st place small club honors. They may be small but they are fast. Crews get another week off to train and we'll look forward to seeing y'all on July 24th at Shadow Cliffs for Sprint Regatta #5 hosted by Kamali'i O Ke Kai.
