The 2011 Outrigger Season Officially Opens

May 7, 2011

Hello All,

The 234 paddlers that descended on Berkeley were greeted to a bright and sunny day...that was the story on shore, but on the water it was a vastly different. Headwinds up to 20+ knots greeted the crews immediately as they passed the His Lordship point. Those fresh, brand new racing jerseys were immediately soaked with salt water. Throughout the day, the headwinds did not let up and with each hour passing the head-on waves came over the bow like jabs with some combos that tested both crew and steersman. From our vantage point on chase, we saw many ama pops but unfortunately no wave induced huli occurred today. Though some canoes swamped later in the day, the crews managed and made it back home safe.

It was nice to see several new canoes gracing both canoe clubs and the NCOCA. The latest designs were on the water, Mirage and Lightening to name the most prevalent. Even nicer was to see the NCOCA crews fresh and eager to race. There were fresh faces to greet and veterans to talk story. Take a look at the results posted on the www.ncoca.com website and you will see some new crews atop the leader board.

Many thanks for the gang at Hui Wa'a for hosting this 1st race to kick our season off. The after party at Pyramid was a nice touch to talk story, as well as the action photo shots taken of the crews. Congratulations to all...we see that y'all been training well during the break and hope to see more of you on the water as the 2011 season progresses. Next stop open water at Monterey!

Malahoz,

Bernie Bernal
