Annual 'Round the Rock ChallengeAugust 26, 2011Aloha NCOCA, On August 6th the Annual Round the Rock Challenge started off at Crissy Field with the Short Course and 21 eager crews including a number of keiki crews. It was a mad dash to the first turn followed by a visit by 3 Vaka right unto the beach. Crews could not help but both watch the Vaka come in across their path in amazement and the competition alongside for some head to head in-close action. Unfortunately and due to tidal conditions the Vaka had to leave as soon as they had arrived. But not without being showered by hundreds of lei and gift bags from our NCOCA members. Late morning the Women and Coeds took off along with 29 other crews. In the end San Francisco OCC Master Women would take overall with a time of 1:45.01. In the Men's 10 mile race crews competed the triangular course with the usual cold, winds, traffic and 21 other competitiors. It would be the one of two Open Men from San Francisco OCC taking the overall lead and finish with a time of 1:22.25. Many thanks to our co-host He'e Nalu OCC, and the NCOCA clubs and members for coming and making this race a big event. It was a nice touch to see our wind banners blowing on the beach, and the mass of paddlers come and greet the Vaka crew on the beach. They really appreciated the lei and gifts as they were immediately passing out the lei among the crews and decorating the bow of their respective Vaka. The gracious gift bags, put together by our membership, were a nice touch that was greatly appreciated. Check out the video of the Round the Rock Challenge put together by Rambo. Most excellent videoography of our sport.
